A "dog-lover's" Terrier, the Lakeland Terrier fully embodies many of the traits most beloved by those who find Terriers charming at all as well as a few delightful surprises. From being low-shedding, to loving children (other Terriers can be more snappish), to being a passionate swimmer and generally very well natured around other dogs. The Lakeland still requires the basic foundation into becoming a well-balanced dog, namely socialization and basic manners training but these lead to quite a treasure!

Peppy and happy, more easy going than many terrier breeds

with other pets: Good if socialized with them early, again this can be unusual for Terriers
with dogs: Again, unlike most Terriers, they can be great around other dogs
Socialization requirements: Relatively high since the rewards are so great.
Ideal home characteristics: Taking the time to rear this dog to achieve their full potential, recognizing the regular (but minimal) grooming requirements.
Temperament Notes: Peppy, alert, happy, minimal barking, fearless and always seems to be expecting something exciting
Training requirement: moderate: commitment to heavy socialization and basic manners at a minimum though this would be a shame given their enthusiasm for many activities
Trainer notes: The Lakeland Terrier could be the ideal training partner for someone who is inclined to play with their dog alot. Playing and training go hand in hand with good trainers and dogs are always learning (whether you think you are training or not). So while the Lakeland might prove to be unreliable in something as precise as a competition ring like obedience, their delight at being innovative and creative could make things very interesting at home as training could lead them to a number of interesting and challenging skills (please don't teach your Lakeland to open the kitchen cabinets for example). Nevertheless, the Lakeland is always thinking and always of the positive outlook that the next thing that happens can't be anything but good!

Country of Origin: Cumberland County, Lake District near the Northern border, England
Original Function: Sheep protector (from primarily fox); follows the fox into the den
History: Developed to hunt with the foxhounds, when the hounds would send the fox to ground, the Lakeland would fearlessly go in after it. Sometimes not emerging for 10-12 days records claim.
