Less well-known than its more dramatic cousins the Afghan Hound, Greyhound and Saluki, the Pharoah Hound shares a rich heritage with a more moderate outline and size. Like all sighthounds, the Pharoah Hound tends to be calm inside, very active when outside, unreliable when off-lead and very gentle. A unique personality and warm expression give the Pharoah Hound a very special place in the heart of all that may cross its path.
Overall Appearance: Medium sized dog of distinct yet moderate sighthound type with natural upright ears and russet coloration.
Personaility - Behavior - Training
Energy Level: moderate to high
General Nature:
Easy going, genial, laid back, playful, intelligent and friendly.
with Children: Generally good but can be intimidated by excessively noisy, physical children, for the sake of the dog, supervision is mandatory.
with other pets: Variable, they were bred to hunt rabbit after all
with dogs: Generally very good
Socialization requirements: moderate, can tend toward shyness if lacking in confidence that comes from proper socialization
Ideal home characteristics: One that appreciates the history and legacy of such a breed as well as its independent nature. Probably not an ideal candidate for being off lead.
Temperament Notes: A quiet dog inside typically with their true energy and speed and activity level emerging when they are outside.
Training requirement: moderate: socialization and basic manners
Trainer notes: The Pharoah Hound was developed as an independent hunter, as such they are not inclined to hang on your every word. Nevertheless their playful and devoted nature makes them a generally good training partner. They do tend to be easily distracted especially by those things that would put them into their instinctual prey/hunting mode (cats, small animals, etc. for example) and this makes it a bit challenging to develop reliable working ability off-lead. Even so, their love of games and play will make any training effort a great deal of fun.
